The Ajax Iota is a specialist treasure locator based on ionic detection. According to Ajax, metals that have been buried for a very long time, the company says over 500 years, build up an ionic field in the surrounding soil, and the Iota is designed to respond to that field. This makes it aimed at searching for old hoards and buried caches rather than everyday modern targets.
Ajax lists gold, silver, bronze, platinum and copper as its main targets. The device uses a high-gain antenna and shows results on a 5-inch colour screen with a menu in eight languages. Alerts change tone with distance to the signal, scans can be stored in 1 GB of memory, and a PIN lock and GPS-synced clock are included. The compact kit weighs about 4 kg packed.
The manufacturer states a forward search distance of 200 metres and a depth of up to 20 metres. These are Ajax's own ratings and should not be treated as guaranteed; ionic signals depend heavily on how long the target has been buried and on ground conditions. Any signal should be confirmed with an imaging or close-range detector. The battery lasts about 10 hours and a two-year warranty applies.
