Gold Detector vs Metal Detector: What’s the Real Difference?

In Karachi, people often ask for a "gold detector machine" when what they really want is a good all-round metal detector. The names get mixed up, but the machines are designed for different jobs — and buying the wrong one is the most common regret we hear.

A metal detector is a generalist. It runs at a middle frequency, separates iron from good targets well, and is comfortable to swing for hours. It finds coins, rings, chains and old relics in parks, fields, construction sites and on the beach. Most first-time buyers should start here.

A gold detector is a specialist. Natural gold nuggets are small and conduct weakly, and they usually sit in iron-rich ground that makes ordinary detectors chatter. To cope, gold detectors use higher frequencies (often 40 kHz and above) or pulse induction, plus stronger ground balancing. That makes them excellent on nuggets but fussy and slower for general hunting.

A simple test: if you will mostly search for coins, jewellery or relics, buy a metal detector. If you are going to known gold-bearing areas — riverbeds, old diggings, rocky hills — and gold is the only goal, a dedicated gold detector will find nuggets that a metal detector will miss.
