Most first-time buyers over-focus on one number — usually "depth" — and miss the specs that actually decide whether a detector is enjoyable to use. Here is what matters, in order, followed by the models we actually recommend to beginners who walk into our Karachi office.

Operating frequency sets what the machine is good at. Lower frequencies (5–15 kHz) handle larger, deeper targets like coins and relics. Higher frequencies (15–20+ kHz) are more sensitive to small, low-conductivity targets like gold jewellery and fine nuggets. Multi-frequency machines run several bands at once, so they perform well across the board but cost more.

Coil size is a trade-off, not an upgrade. A larger coil covers more ground per swing and reaches slightly deeper, but it is heavier, less precise around trash, and worse in tight or rocky spots. An 8–11 inch coil is the practical default for general detecting in Pakistan’s mixed terrain.

Waterproofing is worth paying for even if you never plan to wade in. An IP68-rated coil (and ideally control box) survives monsoon rain and dusty fieldwork without babying it, which matters more day-to-day than the odd metre of extra depth.

Weight adds up over a four-hour session. A detector that feels fine in a shop for two minutes can be tiring by hour three — check the fully adjusted length and battery position, not just the spec sheet number.
