VLF vs Pulse Induction: Which Detector Technology Fits You

Almost every detector on the market uses one of two underlying technologies, and the difference explains most of the confusing spec-sheet comparisons.

VLF (Very Low Frequency) detectors send a continuous signal and compare the outgoing and returning waveform. This lets them discriminate — tell a coin from a bottle cap — and show a target ID. Almost every general-purpose and coin/relic detector is VLF. Its weakness is mineralized or "hot" ground: iron-rich soil can produce false signals or mask real targets, which is common across parts of Pakistan.

Pulse Induction (PI) detectors send sharp pulses and measure the decay of the return signal instead of comparing waveforms. This makes them far less sensitive to ground mineralization, so they dig deeper and more reliably on difficult soil — which is why almost every serious gold nugget detector and long-range locator uses PI or a PI-derived system. The trade-off is little to no discrimination: PI machines tend to signal on most metal, trash included.

In practice: if you are coin and relic hunting on ordinary ground, a multi-frequency VLF machine is the right tool. If you are prospecting for gold nuggets on mineralized or previously-worked ground, a PI-based gold detector will out-perform a VLF machine even if its spec sheet frequency looks lower.
