Detection Depth Explained: Why More Isn’t Always Better

Depth is the number every buyer fixates on, and the one most likely to mislead if you read it out of context. A depth rating only means something next to the target size and ground type it was measured against.

Everyday VLF metal detectors are rated in feet — typically 2–5 ft — because that covers coins, jewellery and most relics on normal ground. Chasing a "deeper" everyday detector usually just means a bigger, heavier coil with worse discrimination, not more finds.

Long-range locators (10–20 ft class) exist for a different job: scanning a large area from a distance to narrow down where to dig, rather than pinpointing on every pass. They trade fine discrimination for search radius.

Professional 3D ground scanners — our OKM and similar systems rated to 25 metres — are built for archaeology, cavity detection and large-structure prospecting, where the target is a void, chamber or large deposit rather than a coin-sized object. Their depth number is real, but it is not comparable to a VLF detector’s spec in any practical sense.
