Ajax Troy

The Ajax Troy is the most compact imaging machine in the Ajax range. It pairs two systems, 3D Ground Imaging and Gradio Smart, in a smaller kit that weighs about 3.7 kg packed. For users who mainly want to scan a suspected spot and see a picture of what lies below, it offers the core imaging features of bigger Ajax models at a more manageable size.

The 3D system produces images that help estimate the shape, size, type and depth of a target, while Gradio Smart reads changes in the magnetic field to detect metals and cavities nearer the surface. Results appear on a bright 5-inch colour screen, and the unit can also be connected to a tablet. Audio alerts change tone with target distance, and up to 1000 scans can be saved.

Ajax rates the 3D imaging system to around 30 metres and Gradio Smart to around 10 metres; these are manufacturer figures and real depth depends on target size and soil. Listed uses include gold, metal objects, voids, mining, archaeology, unexploded ordnance, pipes and cables. A 7.4 V battery gives around 10 hours of use, backed by a two-year warranty. It is a sensible step up for buyers who want imaging without a large kit.
