The Fisher Gold Bug is the simplest model in the Gold Bug family and is aimed at people starting out in gold prospecting. Its 19 kHz operating frequency gives good sensitivity to small nuggets, and the ground balancing system reduces false signals caused by mineralised soil, which is common in gold-bearing areas. It is a straightforward way to learn gold detecting before moving to more advanced machines.
It offers two modes: All Metal for prospecting and Discrimination for coin and relic hunting. An LCD gives a two-digit numeric target ID, and two-tone audio plus Fe-Tone help identify iron. Separate gain and threshold controls let users tune sensitivity and background hum to suit the ground they are working. These controls are easy to understand even for someone who has never used a gold detector.
The supplied 5-inch DD coil is waterproof, compact for working between rocks and stable in difficult soil, though the control box should be kept dry. At about 2.5 lb on one 9V battery giving 15–20 hours, it is comfortable for long days.
