Overview
The Fisher Gold Bug Pro is the best-known member of the Gold Bug family and has been in production since 2010. It runs at 19 kHz, a frequency that gives strong sensitivity to small gold nuggets while still working well on relics and coins, and it can ground balance in very mineralised soil all the way to salt conditions. It remains one of the most widely recommended VLF gold detectors for small and medium nuggets.
Ground balance is set by a computerised Ground Grab button with manual fine adjustment, and the display shows continuous ground phase, mineralisation, signal strength and depth. In Discrimination mode, a 0–99 target ID, two-tone audio and Fisher's V-Break variable tone breakpoint help separate iron from good targets. A no-motion pinpoint mode helps when digging. These features make it equally useful to gold prospectors and relic hunters in iron-heavy ground.
The standard waterproof 5-inch DD coil is ideal for tight spots and hot rocky ground, and larger coils are available. The control box should be kept dry. At about 2.5 lb on one 9V battery giving 15–20 hours, it is easy to carry all day. The Gold Bug DP is the same platform packaged with an 11-inch DD coil. The larger 11-inch coil of the DP package covers more ground in open, less rocky areas.
