Overview
The Minelab GPX 5000 is a pulse induction (PI) detector made for serious gold prospectors. It was introduced in 2010 and for many years was one of the most widely used nugget machines in the world. Pulse induction lets it ignore much of the ground noise caused by hot, iron-rich soil, which is the main reason it can reach gold that sits too deep for most VLF machines.
Its strength comes from Minelab's Multi-Period Sensing, Dual Voltage Technology and Smart Electronic Timing Alignment. In practice this gives the user a choice of soil timings, from General and Deep to Hi-Mineral, Fine Gold, Salt/Gold and Coin/Relic, so the detector can be matched to the ground conditions. Ground balance can run in fixed or tracking mode, and the Quick-Trac button allows a fast rebalance in the field.
The detector was usually supplied with an 11-inch round Double-D coil and a larger 15 x 12-inch Monoloop coil, plus a rechargeable lithium-ion battery rated for around twelve hours of use. Minelab has since replaced it with newer GPX and GPZ models, but the GPX 5000 remains popular on the used and dealer market for deep nugget, patch and relic hunting.

Timings such as General, Deep, Hi-Mineral, Fine Gold, Salt/Gold and Coin/Relic let you tune the machine to the ground you are working.
Flexible Ground Balance
Fixed or tracking ground balance, with a Quick-Trac button for an instant rebalance when the soil changes.
Two Coils Supplied
An 11-inch round Double-D coil for difficult ground and a 15 x 12-inch Monoloop coil for extra depth and coverage.

GPX 5000 vs GPX 6000: what's the difference?+
The GPX 5000, released in 2010, gives eight soil timings and manual control, with an 11 in Double-D and 15x12 in Monoloop coil. The GPX 6000 uses GeoSense-PI with two ground modes and automatic sensitivity, weighs 2.1 kg with its 11-inch coil, and has coils waterproof to 1 m.
Is the GPX 5000 waterproof?+
No. The GPX 5000 is not waterproof, so keep the control box and coils out of water. Audio comes through a 6.35 mm headphone jack, and the 68 Wh lithium-ion battery gives about 12 hours of use. The detector weighs 5.3 lb without the 1.7 lb battery.
